Happy Birthday to a proud Belize

24 September 13
Belize celebrated its 32nd Birthday in style and this little proud nation just ups the ante from year to year. The flags were flying higher, the parades were livelier and the colours were even more dazzling for this year’s knock out Independence Day party. Here are some of our favourite moments:

Fiesta frenzy…. it’s September!

9 September 13
To say that Belize likes a good party is to do the nation a serious injustice…. with record numbers of public holidays, festivals, street parties, regattas and celebrations throughout the year, Belize knows how to up the anti on the fiesta. September is THE party month, starting with St. Georges Caye Day on September 10th.
Steeped in history, between 1650 and 1784, St George’s Caye was the first capital of the British settlement and home of buccaneers and pirates. On September 10, 1798, the British ‘Buccaneers’ (a combination of liberated slaves, Baymen and British soldiers) fought off the Spaniards over the territory of Belize and won. Heavily outnumbered and against all the odds, black men and white men fought courageously side by side, miraculously without the loss of a single life. This was the last attempt made by the Spanish to oust the British from Belize.
Celebrations runs throughout the country, but the main event is on the shores of tiny St George’s Caye. Members of the boating world head to the island for the Battle of St. George’s Caye Sailing Regatta, with kids entering from all over the country, proud parents waving flags, beach parties, BBQ’s and music.
The celebrations in Belize carry on right up to Belize’s Independence day on September 21st. A British Crown Colony since 1862, Belize was declared an independent nation from on September 21st, 1981.
The pride of the country is evident throughout, with the red, white and blue flags flying high and numerous country wide events. This year marks the 32nd Anniversary of Independence and the 215th Anniversary of The Battle of St. George’s Caye. Traditional events around the country include the Queen of the Bay Pageant, Carnival Parade, St. George’s Caye Day Citizens Parade, Expo, Official Independence Day Celebrations and live musical concerts.
