With a commendable conservation program in place, over forty per cent of Belize is protected in the form of nature reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. It was just announced that the expansion of Hol Chan Marine Reserve has been approved, with an additional 360 square kilometers of coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangrove wetland now designated as protected zones. The territory includes Mexico Rocks by the barrier reef, the fly fishing flats on the leeward side of Ambergris Caye, the mangrove islands of Los Salones and the wetlands of Cayo Frances and Mata. Congratulations to Hol Chan Marine Reserve!
