February: Carnival

8th February 2013 (dates vary from year to year)

The whole of Belize celebrates carnival, but nowhere parties quite like San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and the locals really consider this to be THE event of the year. With live music, street dancing, myriad food stalls and paint flying in all directions, it’s not for the faint hearted. 2013 sees the festivities extended to a 5 day spectacular, as follows:

Friday Feb 8:  Noche de Enmascarados. Freaky jesters will be dotted around the town playing pranks on innocent bystanders. This is a new addition, so we’re intrigued to see how it goes!

Saturday Feb 9:  Sabado de Bando Ball. A grand masquerade ball will be held at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium with live bands and entertainment. Masks, feathers and necklaces are the theme and the Carnival Queen will be selected purely by crowd acclamation.

Sunday Feb 10:  Carnival Comparsas throughout the day featuring parades, drumming and music, culminating in the Block Party at Central Park with live entertainment, singing, dancing and multiple food and bar stands throughout town.

Monday Feb 11:
Full town parade and judging of the floats

Tuesday, Feb 12:
Final Day of parades with entertainment at Central Park, the announcement and presentation of Comparsa Winners and the initiation of the painting, where the objective is to paint as many people as possible. It can be a little wild but a lot of fun!
