Traveling to Belize is as easy as 1, 2, 3. But before you embark on your vacation, there are a few essential things you should be aware of.
Here are some tips to help you prepare for your trip:
Traveling with children to an adventure-packed destination, such as Belize, can be an enjoyable and memorable experience. However, ensuring you have all the necessary permissions is vital, including a notarized letter of consent from the other parent if you travel alone with your children.
So, double-check your documentation and paperwork before departing for your adventure in Belize! This will ensure you and your family enjoy your trip without complications or delays.
Ah, the year-round tropical warmth… Hello, sunny and warm (just how we like it in Belize)!
While the country experiences both dry and wet seasons – the dry season is from December to May, while the wet season lasts from June to November – it is still possible for December to have occasional rains.
In the height of the summer months, the coast can get hot and humid. Pack breathable, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and, of course, sunglasses.
Despite a few sporadic showers, Belize is a beautiful and vibrant country worth visiting!
Sargassum affects Belize too, and while there is no “seaweed season,” we cannot foresee when or how often this phenomenon appears along our coastline, but you shouldn’t let it dampen your vacation.
So, as appealing as they are, we invite you to look outside the proverbial box of Belize’s Barrier Reef and Great Blue Hole.
Venture off the beaten path into a world of natural wonders – an abundance of fauna and flora, an extensive cave system, and a culturally rich and diverse people – that lies just beyond its beaches.
With a bit of planning and a positive attitude, you can have a great time despite the presence of sargassum.
Belize is different from your typical tourist destination. Planning ahead is important because some areas are remote and vast; you won’t find cell service or paved roads everywhere you go, and Google Maps may only sometimes be reliable.
Booking with local tour operators, which we highly recommend, ensures your experience is authentic and safe.
The terms “5-star” and “luxury” can vary in meaning for travelers depending on the places they visit. And while it may mean high-end accommodations to many, the discerning traveler knows that true 5-star experiences come from authentic offerings and personalized services.
From helicopter flyovers of the world-renowned Great Blue Hole – witness its sheer magnitude, its near-perfect circular shape, and the stark contrast of its deep blue interior with the shallow turquoise waters surrounding it – to sunset sundowners during astronomical phenomena like the Spring Equinox (where the sun gradually sinks directly above and behind Xunantunich Maya City’s El Castillo, followed by a sky painted in hues of orange, pink, and red), countless opportunities exist to make memories that will last a lifetime.
For a glimpse into an ancient empire that fascinates historians and tourists alike, exploring the City of Caracol with an archaeologist is a must, followed by a delectable picnic spread of traditional Maya fare onsite.
Or indulge in an all-inclusive crewed catamaran charter and sail along Belize’s stunning coastline! A “floating hotel,” as we call it, offers unparalleled access to the world’s largest living barrier reef, three of the Caribbean’s four atolls, and hundreds of idyllic cayes.
So if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable vacation experience, Belize is the perfect place to make it happen.
Belize operates in an infinite loop of island time (or, as we call it, Belize time). But what does “island time” actually mean?
It means you should embrace the relaxed pace of life and “go slow.” Don’t rush through your days trying to cram in as many activities as possible.
Instead, take the time to enjoy its azure waters, explore the lush rainforests, and savor the delicious cuisine.
Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply want to unwind, Belize has something for everyone. So kick back, relax, and let the laid-back vibes of the country wash over you.
Bonus: Remember to give back to those in need by supporting great organizations that make a difference. Two programs worth checking out are Pack-a-Pound and Pack for a Purpose, which allow you to donate extra supplies to local communities during your travels. Sponsoring a Belizean child’s tuition is also a fantastic way to make a lasting impact.
Thank you for considering these options.
Experience. Relax. Repeat. Because a vacation in Belize is what you make of it.

We all know what an A-lister is. But what is an A-lister in the Tourism & Travel Industry, and what does it take to become one of Travel + Leisure’s A-List Travel Advisors? We asked Absolute Belize’s Director, Patricia, about her most recent achievement.
Being a pioneer in the Belize Travel Trade Industry is a true privilege that I do not take lightly. In 2019, Rachael and I made it on Wendy Perrin’s WOW List of Trusted Travel Experts for Belize – oh, how we have evolved and flourished since then! I achieved Top Travel Specialist status on Conde Nast Traveler’s coveted list of travel connoisseurs worldwide in 2021. This year, Travel + Leisure published its 21st edition of A-List Specialists, and, for the first time, Belize has a dedicated specialist: Yours truly.
While becoming a T+L Specialist was far from easy – I was turned down the first time – I refused to quit trying. And even though many innovative, knowledgeable, and skilled specialists are on the list, I firmly believe no other specialist knows my country and people like I do. It is truly an honor to be among the world’s most outstanding travel planners!
As a result, Belize now has a born Belizean representing it in the luxury travel market! But what exactly does this mean for Belize? More visibility in the global arena, more diversity, and more authentic experiences – curated experiences that allow our clients to fully immerse themselves in our country, cultures, and heritage. Because Belize has so much more to offer than just the Great Blue Hole.
I truly appreciate our team and the fantastic partners I have had the pleasure of working with. You all make it possible for us to showcase the best of Belize. These accomplishments are not just for me; they are for all of us. Thank YOU!
Congratulations on such a monumental achievement, Pat! T+L’s A-List is live on their website and will appear in their March 2023 print issue on newsstands tomorrow, February 17, 2023.

From Rachael Wilson, Founder: As we sail into 2023, I find myself at a loss for words to express my tremendous pride and gratitude for the absolutely stellar team at AB. Patricia, Josh, and Julianie broke all records in 2022, welcoming our ever-growing number of guests to our spectacular country and showcasing the best of Belize with perfect planning precision, passion, and prowess.
Patricia will share more on these monumental milestones while I share a few personal highlights and look to 2023.
At AB, we consider ourselves travel experts, but beyond that, pioneers in travel innovation. We strive to uncover deeper and explore further – and with more authenticity – bringing experiential travel to our guests that exceed all expectations.
Some personal Belize travel highlights in 2022 include:
- Witnessing turtle hatchings at Half Moon Caye, Lighthouse Reef Atoll
- Getting up close and personal with reef sharks at Long Caye, Lighthouse Reef Atoll
- Exploring the expanse and wilderness of Turneffe Atoll via catamaran with our sister company, Belize Sailing Vacations
- Devouring Placencia’s authentic food scene with a Doctor of Food Anthropology, who was raised on a sustainable cacao farm deep in southern Belize
- Stargazing from Francis Ford Coppola’s private island, Coral Caye

The list goes on; however, my incomparable travel experience was sleeping in a [very] rustic, over-the-water thatch cabana at Glover’s Reef Atoll as part of our 2023 glamping initiative. That “last frontier” feeling of sleeping on the edge of a remote atoll, with nothing to hear but the waves crashing on the reef, being woken to the sounds of the calling ospreys at sunrise, and seeing sleeping sharks under your dock can only be described as once-in-a-lifetime.
We are beyond excited to continue to bring you more of Belize in 2023 and are filled with gratitude for you being part of our AB Family!
~ Rach
From Patricia Johnson, Director: We welcomed the New Year with a record number of visitors in-country, and we are only now taking the time to reflect on what a great year 2022 was and what we can anticipate for 2023.
Every aspect of our business is on an upward trajectory, so much so that we added a Guest Services Coordinator to our team. You may have heard from Julianie as she and I ensure that all the little details are taken care of for a seamless vacation.
Julianie’s attention to detail, hands-on experience, and meticulousness make her the perfect Guest Services Coordinator.
2022 saw a boost in bookings for Placencia in southern Belize, and this was easily our most popular destination with its golden sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and lagoon-side mountain views. On an international level, Belize was voted one of the Most Desirable Emerging Destinations for the Wanderlust Travel Awards and the Friendliest Countries in the World by Conde Nast Traveler.
At Absolute Belize, we have been celebrating our very own monumental milestones, including:
- being the only Trusted Travel Experts in Belize on Wendy Perrin’s WOW List for the fourth consecutive year
- being on the coveted Conde Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist List for the second successive year, and
- being featured in the Wall Street Journal
As for me, last year I shared with you all that I was looking forward to family trips and explorations in and out of Belize, and I did just that. Some of my favorite travel memories outside of Belize include the following:
- My third trip to Costa Rica, but my first time with the entire family. Highlights were taking my kids to the Manuel Antonio National Park and the Arenal area.
- A 5th-anniversary trip to Cabo, San Lucas, with the highlights being a sunset whale-watching cruise and a visit to Todos Santos.
- Visiting Antigua and Lake Atitlan in Guatemala with breathtaking views, cultural immersions, and historical sites.

I traveled extensively throughout Belize with family, friends, and colleagues in 2022. Some of my favorite memories include:
- Traveling to off-the-beaten-path places in southern Belize and participating in authentic cultural experiences such as the Battle of the Drums in Punta Gorda Town, Maya Cooking Class in Indian Creek Village, and Chocolate Making at Ixcacao Chocolate in San Felipe Village.
- I had the pleasure of visiting Ray Caye, not once, but three times, and as one of our clients said, “this island is magical.”
- Visiting Turneffe Atoll and the Green Champion of the Year, Turneffe Flats, was undoubtedly one for the books.
I wish I could mention all the places I visited and the memories I made, but know that our recommendations are always based on first-hand experiences and on-the-ground knowledge of this small but diverse destination. We already have some surprises up our sleeve for 2023 and look forward to continued growth and curating incredible travel experiences.
Thank you for your trust, thank you for your feedback and reviews, and thank you for your referrals. We appreciate you!
Happy 2023!
~ Pat

Last month, Absolute Belize and our sister company, Belize Sailing Vacations, sailed beyond the world’s largest living barrier reef to Guatemala’s Rio Dulce.
The journey began with an early morning drive from the country’s adventure hub, San Ignacio, to the Cucumber Beach Marina in the old capital, Belize City.
We were underway by 10 a.m., soaking up the sun as Endless Options – a 48 ft. Leopard catamaran and our home for the next four nights – danced over azure waters.
From bar-hopping to fishing to snorkeling, stops along the southern coast included: Tobacco Caye, which sits at the reef’s edge; King Lewey’s, a 1-acre pirate-themed island; Ray Caye, a private island on the outskirts of the Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve; and Placencia, a highly sought-after peninsula, before venturing into Livingston, a remote village perched at the mouth of the Rio Dulce (Sweet River).
Vivid blue waters gave way to deep green as we meandered upstream for miles. Towering limestone cliffs loomed ahead and opened into a vast river surrounded by dense jungle as far as the eye could see.
Finally, we arrived at our destination: Nanajuana Marina, where freshwater meets the rainforest. More than a marina, Nanajuana is an experience and a Caribbean paradise sheltered from the elements, which offers our vessels safe mooring during the off-season every year.
Annual migration complete, time to explore and relax.
*If you would like to book a similar sailing experience, please contact our Travel Specialists.

Absolute Belize and our Director, Patricia, featured in The Wall Street Journal. Yes, THE Wall. Street. Journal: Only the most influential business-oriented newspaper published in the U.S. of A and one of the world’s leading financial publications!
The article focuses on the most difficult decision when planning a multigenerational family vacation: Where to go. Three travel advisors, including our very own Pat, were challenged to recommend a winter-break holiday for ten persons with an all-in budget of $40K.
You can read more about the destinations she suggested here.

The season is strictly enforced to maintain healthy stocks and ensure an abundance for locals and tourists alike. Some visitors even plan their trip around the season’s opening on July 1st and coincide their vacation with one of the “Lobsterfest” celebrations in Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Placencia.
So why wait any longer? Jet set to Belize this summer and feast to your heart’s and palate’s content!
