The Resort and Villas, Ray Caye (Hatchet)

Private Islands

Booking enquiry

A private island with around a mile of shoreline, idyllic cabanas besides the water, full resort amenities and warm and friendly staff make Hatchet Caye an ocean lovers paradise.

Scuba Divers are close to the Gladdon Split Marine Reserve, where the magnificent Whale Sharks migrate between April and July. The area contains some of the healthiest and most thriving parts of the reef, making it a world class scuba diving destination.

Fly Fishermen can attempt the ‘Grand Slam’ right from the shoreline, since the waters around the island are thriving with bait fish which attracts larger fish such as permit, tarpon and bonefish.

The island’s proximity to the barrier reef also means that Deep Sea Fishing is on the doorstep, with the opportunity to land sailfish, bonito, marlin, king fish, and all kinds of tuna.

Highlights of the island also include a full array of water toys including stand up paddle boards, kayaks, hobie cats, a pool, volleyball and spa treatments on demand.

The island is 17 miles east of Placencia Village. The journey involves a 40 minute light aircraft flight from Belize International Airport to Placencia, where you will be met by Hatchet Caye welcome staff. From there it’s a 1 hour fast boat ride to the island, an invigorating way to arrive!

The island is home to the Lionfish Grill, serving delicious island cuisine and tropical cocktails. The Pirate’s Reef Dive Shop is a full service shop, offering full PADI certifications, diving to multiple locations, snorkelling, flats and deep sea fishing trips, kayaking and even an opportunity to learn to spear lion fish!

Other amenities include a pool, Wi-Fi and use of all non motorised water toys.

Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Lionfish Grill offers a well rounded menu of popular plates and inventive seafood dishes, cooked with local produce, some of which is grown in the island’s own organic island garden.

Lionfish is a recurring theme throughout the menu and delicious. Lionfish, while exotic and beautiful, are an invasive species and harmful to the waters of Belize, so it is encouraged to try some of the lionfish specials.

The dinner menu excels with creativity, signature dishes include the lionfish crepes and the ‘Mai Kai’ – poached lionfish fillet in a coconut red curry sauce. The jalapeno margarita also packs a punch!

“Most Amazing Place Loved it – We did a girls trip for 6 nights and this place is too beautiful for words. The staff is the best I have ever had. I would recommend this to anyone that loves great food, fun people and beautiful beaches. I can’t say enough good things about our trip. Belize people in general are the most kind considerate and friendly.” – Godfrey, Illinois

Paradise – When our boat to Hatchet Caye was met by one of the staff carrying a tray of tropical beverages, I knew we were in for something special! The luxurious cabanas are spaced far enough apart to give privacy to each porch, (which are decorated with a potted aloe in case of sunburn). The grounds are gorgeous, the staff is wonderful…” – Ellsworth, Wisconsin

Terrific Small Resort Getaway – We stayed for four nights in January and found Hatchet Caye to be a terrific small resort getaway. Immediately we felt welcomed to the island, safe and well taken care of. The room was cozy and clean, and came with a terrific view of the beach and ocean. The Lionfish Grill was outstanding and could stand alone as a five star restaurant..” – Cleveland, Ohio
